Editorial Reviews

Before Sgt. Pepper, no one seriously thought of rock music as actual art. That all changed in 1967, though, when John, Paul, George and Ringo (with "A Little Help" from their friend, producer George Martin) created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 30-plus years, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Lennon's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," the carnival-like "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") and McCartney's music hall-styled "When I'm 64," to Harrison's Eastern-leaning "Within You Without You," and the avant-garde mini-suite, "A Day in the Life," Sgt. Pepper was a milestone for both '60s music and popular culture. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN ANYTHING THIS CENTURY, December 6, 1999

Reviewer:   robert warmington (brisbane australia) - See all my reviews
Let me begin by saying that comparisons to the Beatles with anyone in this century is and allways will be a study in futility. They are simply untouchable. This includes the usual suspects such as the stones, cream? ,pink floyd, hendrix and a myriad of other contenders. The beatles only true rivals are the likes of Mozart,Beethoven et al. The Beatles are the musical Mt Everest of the 20th century. Having said this the only real competition for Sgt pepper as best album of all time is other Beatles albums, abbey road and rubber soul are the prime contenders. Sgt pepper is a masterpiece of acid drenched psycadelic dreaminess,a virtual LSD trip. Its insane, fun, wistful, weird, philosophical and besides that its a treasure trove for " paul is dead " enthusiasts. Listen to Sgt pepper and drift away into a land of multicolored landscapes, quirky characters and english isles and leave the dreary real world behind. Standouts are lucy in the sky,mr kite, fixing a hole and when Im 64 but there all mini masterpieces. To end if you want to know which stones led zep or clash CD to get it doesnt matter cause theyre all the same.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this. Even if it takes a little help from your friends., January 8, 2001

Reviewer:   Chas Carey (The Long And Winding Road, USA) - See all my reviews
In 1967, renouncing the life of screaming girls and cute faces, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr to the uninformed) walked into the recording studios of Abbey Road and, within less than 200 days, came out with the album that redefined rock music. Just looking at the cover gives you an idea of the music that's coming after you. Many think that "A Day in the Life" is the best song written by the Beatles, though there is strong argument for "Getting Better", "With A Little Help From My Friends" and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds". What a surprise! They are ALL on this album, complete with great 'filler' songs like "Lovely Rita", "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Good Morning, Good Morning". The only clunker is George Harrison's philosophical quandry "Within You Without You", which consists of George yanking at a Sitar and speaking about why people were different under the effects of LSD. OK, maybe not, but that's what it SOUNDS like. That's what the 'skip' button is for, and you'll only need to use it once. Second only to "Let it Be" and "The Beatles" (aka The White Album) in my mind, Sgt. Pepper is the album from whic every modern rock song stemmed.

Those who claim to like music in general who do not own it need to be Fixing A Hole where their brain's fallen out.

1 out of 5 stars Not the best band ever. Just a typical 60s pop rock group, September 1, 2004

Reviewer:   Greg Dilmore (Miami, FL) - See all my reviews
These guys didn't create rock and rock. Nor did they influence other bands that came out in the 70s and 80s. The only influence they created was the "good looking boy band" image. The Beatles were just another pretty boy group back in their day, no different from Blink 182 or Hanson. Sure you think they are the band who helped inspire rock 'n roll but you guys are wrong. Rock N' Roll didn't become big by the Beatles nor The Rolling stones. These guys also had subliminal messages encouraging people to smoke marijuana and do drugs. Now how can a band that talks about drugs be called the best band in the world? I bet all of you beatles fans hate rap because rap talks about drugs, well guess what? Your not different. My thoughts of this album is that it should be the soundtrack for little kids tv shows because it sounds like children's music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Beatles Album Ever, August 31, 2004

A Kid's Review
Many people liketo say this is a very overrated album, and I disagree. Anyone with half a mind knows just by listening to the first two tracks that this album is going to be great.

Sgt. Pepper's: Good way to start the "show." McCartney is great on this. 9/10

With a Little Help from my friends: I love this song. Ringo is a perfect fit for this song. Probably one of their greatest songs. 10/10

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds: The chorus is great, but the song gets a little annoying after listening to it often. Still, good song. 7/10

Getting Better: Very underrated song. When people talk about good Beatles songs, this never comes up. Good lyrics, sweet chorus. 8 1/2/10

Fixing a Hole: Another underrated song. Great lyrics, and sounds different. 8 1/2/10

She's Leaving Home: A slow, plodding-type song. Still, very well done. 8/10

Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!: I like how in this song there is this whole circus theme around it. Great lyrics (Henry the Horse dances the waltz). 9/10

Within you, Without you: Oh my goodness! It seems like I'm the only person who likes this song! Probably one of the most underrated songs in the Beatle's catalog! Nothing like the sound of a sitar! 9/10

When I'm Sixty-four: Great song. Even though it kind of changes the whole flow of the album, it is a great song with sophisticated lyrics. 9/10

Lovely Rita: Apparently, Paul wrote this song when he heard the american phrase "Meter Maid." He felt it was so funny that he and lennon had to colaborate on a song about this. Well, if Paul thinks someting as basic as thatis so funny thathe'll write a great song about it, it's good in my book. 9/10

Good Morning, Good Morning: Ahh! This song is so annoying! I can't say I absolutely hate it, but it just does'nt seem to fit, even if all the songs are different. 6/10

Sgt. Pepper's (reprise): The drum intro is well done, as is this song overall. However, I can't say that I like it more than the original first track. 8/10

A day in the Life: My absolute favorite Beatles song. McCartney is great, but it's the superb Lennon who steals the show (no pun intended). Great lyrics, great sound, great little easter eggs, like a whistle that most human's can't hear but drives dogs crazy. 10/10

Overall: 111/130 (85%)
I believe one of the reasons this album was great was because it was so diverse. Hard rock, sitar, waltz, music hall, trippy. It has it all!

5 out of 5 stars You need to own this record., August 28, 2004

Reviewer:   David Yama (Bellevue, WA, USA) - See all my reviews
There is nothing I can tell you about Sgt. Pepper that you have not already heard. After this album dropped, rock and roll never sounded the same again. From what I have heard and read, this was one of the first records of consequence in the world. If you haven't heard this then it's time...and if you haven't found the Beatles yet then this is a great place to start. From that very first obscure violin note to the very last trombone in A Day in the Life this record is pure magic. Sgt. Pepper makes me feel lucky to be alive and proves that the Beatles are truly the greatest of all time, end of story.

5 out of 5 stars brilliance, August 24, 2004

Reviewer:   sunshine "IMAGINE" (New York USA) - See all my reviews
Having grown up with this album (I'm 17), it has a very special place with me. My dad used to play it all the time when I was younger, and only in the past six months have I revived the Beatles in my music repetoire. This album is a masterpiece, and as my mom tells me, Sgt. Pepper's IS the summer of '67.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band- 5/5- A good way to start off the show. The concert feel is nice.

With A Little Help From My Friends- 5/5- Brilliance from Ringo. Not the worlds best singer, but his voice fits the song. All he wants is someone to love. Hehe.

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds- 5/5- This is the song I remember the most. The introduction is brilliance, and the chorus is amazing.

Getting Better- 5/5- I like the contrast between Paul and John. "I have to admit its getting better" vs "It couldn't get much worse"

Fixing A Hole- 5/5- In my opinion, a very underrated song by the Beatles. Minds wandering...it's great.

She's Leaving Home- 4/5- Another underrated song. It starts out a little boring, but the chorus is brilliant, voices are amazing.

Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite- 4/5- Another prominent song in my memory. I love the part where it turns to the waltz, it just shows off their musical talent.

Within You, Without You- 3/4- Even though I'm not a fan of this song, I recognize the talent it conveys on George's part. Always the George fan, I'm glad he had such a sucessful contribution to this album.

When I'm Sixty-Four- 5/5- Hard to believe Paul wrote this as a teenager. A nice little love ditty.

Lovely Rita- 5/5- A song I particularly like. I especially adore the whole rumours about how Paul "died" when he glanced over at 'Rita'.

Good Morning, Good Morning- 3/5- Definately not my favorite song, but it's "cute". I know John hated it, so I've always wondered why it made it on the album.

Sgt. Pepper's Reprise- 5/5- I actually like this better than the first track version. The drum beat in the beginning is awesome, and when Paul goes "one, two, three, four", and the song just takes off.

A Day In The Life- 5/5- If I could rate it infinity, I would. This song is absolute brilliance. I know enough about the technicalities of music to know that this song is a masterpiece.

All in all, the album is a stroke of genius. I don't think it's ever been matched. However, everyone go buy Abbey Road as well :-). ~*~IMAGINE~*~
